Phenergan cream for babies is marketed as an alternative to breastfeeding. It was approved in Canada 2011.
The drug is also used off-label for "nausea, vomiting, irritability, and anorexia associated with breast-feeding."
As a drug, mefloquine is approved for use in Canada treating malaria, typhoid fever, dengue, and other illnesses.
It has been shown to be safe and effective as a treatment for malaria in children. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in pregnant women 2012, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in February of this year.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2011 found that infants who were given mefloquine during prenatal care in Bangladesh were at reduced risk of development anemia and a range of other clinical problems.
In the journal Pediatrics, a study published in December of 2012 found that infants mothers diagnosed with a history of mefloquine drug use, as compared with babies who were not exposed to mefloquine, more likely be exposed to other drugs, which may affect later developmental outcomes.
Mefloquine can make the symptoms of malaria worse. For this reason, it's thought not to be recommended for use in pregnant women.

A separate study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1995 found mefloquine to be "of limited value" at treating infections caused by other bacteria that cause diarrhea.
